Retail pharmacies at eight select Hen House, Price Chopper and Walmart locations in Johnson County will be offering a limited number of COVID-19 vaccines in the coming days through the Federal Retail Pharmacy Program.
The vaccine supply through this channel will be extremely limited and is aimed at residents 65 years and older who are eligible to be vaccinated in Phase 2 of Kansas’ vaccination plan.
For these reasons, provincial and state health officials are still patient with residents waiting to receive doses.
“It’s just a drop in the bucket compared to what we need,” said Lee Norman, MD, secretary of the Kansas Department of Health and the Environment.
A total of approximately 8,700 doses will be shipped to Kansas for use in more than 30 counties as part of the Federal Retail Pharmacy Program. In this context, Johnson County estimates that approximately 150,000 provincial residents are eligible for Phase 2. (More than 30,000 have already been vaccinated.)
Overall, KDHE says that nearly 234,000 Kansans – about 8% of the population – have been vaccinated so far.
It is unclear when exactly doses may be available at this retail pharmacy. The CDC says residents who are eligible to be vaccinated should visit the pharmacies’ websites for more information.
Official health officials said these doses allocated by the Federal Retail Pharmacy Program are not distributed by the Department of Health.
Currently in Johnson County, all individuals 65 years of age and older can be vaccinated, along with a high-contact critical employee, such as teachers, first responders, and grocery store employees.

- Hen House, 13600 S. Blackbob Road, Olathe
- Hen House, 6900 W. 135th St., Overland Park
- Walmart, 13600 S. Alden St., Olathe
In addition, two pharmacies in the province of Wyandotte are also on the state’s list:
- Hen House, 8120 Parallel Parkway, Kansas City, Kan.
- Price Chopper, 5300 Speaker Road, Kansas City, Kan.
