7-day average of new COVID-19 cases sets grim records

SAN ANTONIO San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg briefed the community on the local response to COVID-19 in their daily information session Friday night.

Nirenberg reported 143,503 total COVID-19 cases and 1,710 total deaths in Bexar County, an increase of 2,889 new cases. Six deaths related to the virus were confirmed on Friday.

The 7-day moving average of cases is at 2,041, a significant increase and the highest since the start of the pandemic, Nirenberg said.

Although these numbers are worrying, Nirenberg said the number of hospitalizations has still improved slightly.

City officials reported that 1,387 patients were admitted to the hospital, which is less than Thursday. The intensive care units reported 403 patients, an increase of 382. Of the patients, 243 were on ventilators, compared to 231 on Thursday.

There are 10% of the beds with staff and 53% of the fans available.

Officials have continued to question the public’s patients as they work on rolling out vaccine doses in the limited deliveries they receive. Until then, they have advised the public to continue with good social efforts to reduce the spread of the virus.
