1. Coronavirus

2. Withuis

President Biden is preparing for a week of executive action addressing trade, climate change, health care, immigration and other top issues. Among them, Biden is expected to repeal Trump’s ban on transgender people serving in the military today. Today, he has to reintroduce Covid-19 travel restrictions for non-US citizens who have been to Brazil, Ireland, the UK and much of Europe. Transport officials are already considering ways to uphold Biden’s recent interstate masking mandate. Elsewhere in the new administration, Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin recommends a review of the Pentagon’s sexual assault and harassment programs. Biden’s administration is also under pressure to investigate the recent SolarWinds hood, which is believed to be carried out by Russian institutions.

3. Capitol riot

The Department of Justice has unveiled new criminal charges against suspected Capitol rioters, including an employee of the Federal Aviation Administration. Another rioter was charged with threatening to rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Meanwhile, the Wall Street Journal reports that in the days before the riot in the Capitol, Trump pressured the Department of Justice to ask the Supreme Court directly to invalidate Biden’s victory in the election. The New Year’s weekend effort reportedly failed after Trump’s DOJ appointees refused to file the case. Trump’s Senate indictment begins the week of February 8, a move meant to give his legal team more time to prepare.

4. Brexit

The UK is adjusting to its new Brexit reality, and the fishing industry is particularly hard hit, with reports of catches apparently rotting because exporters cannot get them to the European Union. Some logistics companies are concerned that imports and exports are not even viable for some companies unless another agreement is reached with the EU. Shipping has also become an issue and businesses have reported heaps of returned packages. The British economy shrank in the first quarter, leading to serious concerns about a double recession amid continuing pandemic challenges.

5. Tacoma

Protesters gathered in Tacoma, Washington, last night, one day after a Tacoma police officer crashed into a crowd. The officer was one of the units responding Saturday to an incident involving about 100 people. The crowd allegedly surrounded his vehicle and hit it. A statement from Tacoma Police Department said the officer feared for his life and tried to back down, but could not. Graphic video of the incident shows the car approaching the crowd, backing up as soon as it is surrounded and then accelerating. The rear tires of the vehicle can be seen rolling over someone lying in the street. The incident comes as police departments across the country are investigating how they use deadly force.
