Authorities in eastern Oklahoma said five children and one adult were killed in an early-morning shooting Tuesday that ended with a family member of the victims in custody.
Police responded to a 1:30 call from several people who had been shot in a residence southeast of Muskogee. When officers arrived there, a suspect came forward with a weapon, officials said.
An officer fired one round and missed the suspect, who was later apprehended after a brief chase, police said. The suspect is related to the victims, Muskogee police chief Johnny Teehee told NBC News.
Inside the residence, police found four deceased children and one deceased adult.
A fifth child later died after fleeing to a Tulsa hospital for life, police said in a statement. “One adult woman with life-threatening injuries was also taken to a Tulsa hospital.”
Muskogee is about 50 km southeast of Tulsa.
