5 astronomical events in 2021: Expect super total lunar eclipse, August blue moon

These astronomical events in 2021 give you another reason to kiss goodbye to 2020.

A supermoon turns red on May 26 for a super total lunar eclipse, according to AccuWeather. It will be visible throughout the western United States before sunrise.

In the northeast, a “ring of fire” solar eclipse will be visible in northern Ontario on June 10. The moon will be too far from the earth to completely block the sun and create the red ring.

Later in the summer, shooting stars rain from the night sky on August 11-12 for the Perseid meteor shower. The Perseids, which raise about 75 meteors per hour, are dust and debris from the Comet Swift-Tuttle, AccuWeather explains.

A blue moon will rise on August 22nd. It will be a seasonal blue moon, the third of four full moons in a single season.

The year ends with the Geminid meteor shower, which will culminate on the evening of December 13-14. AccuWeather described it as the best meteor shower of the year, saying it could produce up to 120 meteors per hour.

The shower, which consists of debris derived from Asteroid 3200 Phaethon, is known for its quantity and the bright, multicolored meteors it produces.
