5.3 magnitude earthquake shakes Alaska

A magnitude 5.3 earthquake shook the region of Point MacKenzie, Alaska on Saturday, killing at least thousands of people.

The area is accustomed to earthquakes, but it is not normally of this magnitude, an official from the National Earthquake Information Center told The Hill.

There have been 2,794 people who have submitted a “felt report” to the United States Geological Survey so far, according to data from his website.

It is not clear if anyone was injured in the quake.

Officials say there is no threat of a tsunami, but there is the possibility of aftershocks in the region.

Reports of those who felt the quake came from Point MacKenzie, Anchorage, Eagle River, Knik-Fairview and Whitehorse.

This earthquake follow a magnitude 7.1 earthquake that struck Japan earlier this month. No tsunami was reported in Japan due to the quake.
