4th Summit County resident dies from COVID-19

According to the Summit County Public Health Department, a Summit County resident died of COVID-19 earlier this month. The death is the fourth in the province due to COVID-19.

The 47-year-old Summit County man died on Dec. 7 at Penrose Hospital in Colorado Springs due to respiratory failure caused by COVID-19. According to public officials, the man also had other significant health conditions. He tested positive for COVID-19 before his death and was transferred via Flight for Life from Summit County to Penrose Hospital.

“It makes us sad to lose someone in our community to this disease, and we express our sincere condolences to his family,” Amy Wineland, Director of Public Health in Summit County, said in a news release.

In addition to the four deaths due to COVID-19 residents, Summit County also counted two additional deaths among individuals who tested positive for COVID-19 but died of other causes.

Summit County receives information about COVID-19 deaths due to Colorado’s Electronic Disease Reporting System, and data regarding deaths due to the disease is collected by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment’s Vital Statistics program. The program determines only a single underlying cause of death for statistical purposes based on what is listed on the death certificate. According to the country, there is often a delay between the date on which the death certificate is submitted and the causes of death determined.

Data on the Colorado Public Health and Environment Department’s website for COVID-19 deaths is available directly from the National Center for Health and Statistics at CDC.gov/nchs/nvss/covid-19.htm.
