One of the many questions that people have been pondering since the draft order became official is whether the 49ers would trade to secure the coveted ‘Franchise Quarterback’. There have been good arguments on both sides of the issue, but there is one more thing worth wondering: what if the 49ers did not have to trade in April to get a quarterback?
On today’s Niner Nate-tion Podcast, Nate Nelson and Leo Luna took the leap and made the first twelve picks of a so-called dream mock draft for the 49ers. It was not a fantasy mockery where every team before the 49ers went insane and Trevor Lawrence passed on, just one of a million possible scenarios a quarter could make available after the first 11 picks.
If that were the case, what would Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch do? Almost any member of the front office who spoke on the record about the concept mentioned how important it is to promote the team with young, inexpensive talent for the future of the franchise. It may seem like it’s trading for someone they like, but if it’s for you? Do Kyle and John take the leap and pick, or do they want to take advantage of a QB-needy team trying to make a big splash of their own? Furthermore, what if they stay where they are and simply give up a quarter?
That would probably be the end of 49ers Twitter, not that Lynch or Shanahan care much about such things.
So much about the true intentions of the team remains unknown, and, in fact, we will probably never really know what their ideal scenario would be. I still think it’s fun to think and what the program of today did for me.
