Your latest update from Richard Sherman is unexciting, but interesting for obvious reasons.
Sherman believes his time with the 49ers is over, something he said in December and earlier this month. Now he’s telling us why he thinks he’s moving from San Francisco next month.
“It’s been made pretty clear,” Sherman said this week about his talks with 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch via the Sacramento Bee. “It was a good conversation, nothing crazy. Just a good conversation about where they are and where I am, and their plans. We were both very positive and as good as you in a situation like this.”
At age 32 and at the end of a three-year deal signed in 2018, Sherman simply no longer fits the 49ers. Add to that the lower-salary projection that forces teams across the league to say goodbye to veterans, and it’s understandable why both he and 49ers buyers are on the same page and are going to divorce kindly, which Sherman calls’ an incredible chapter in my profession. “
Even if the 49ers had nothing to do with the hood crane, there would be no guarantee that San Francisco would bring Sherman back. The veteran struggled with calving issues in 2020, playing in just five games and scoring one interception. However, he will still carry a lot of value with his locker room presence, which the 49ers will miss – and a team with a need in the secondary space to spend will be welcome.
For now, it’s a matter of passing the days before Sherman goes to live elsewhere. It looks like his tone and the team’s perspective will not change before the start of the new league year.
