487 more COVID-19 cases, 9 deaths, more than 20K vaccinations reported in Utah Tuesday

SALT LAKE CITY – The number of COVID-19 cases in Utah increased by 487 on Tuesday, with nine more deaths and 20,268 more vaccinations, according to the Utah Department of Health.

Two of the deaths occurred before Feb. 9, but are still being investigated by the state medical examiner’s office, the health department said. There are now an estimated 16,293 active cases of COVID-19 in Utah, according to state data.

According to the health department, the current average number of positive cases of seven days per day is now at 603. The positive test rate per day for the period reported using the “people over people” method is now 10.5%. The positive test rate per day of seven days, calculated using the ‘test over test’ method, is now 4.9%.

There are 213 COVID-19 patients currently hospitalized in Utah, including 92 in intensive care units, state data show. About 67% of all beds for intensive care units in Utah were occupied Tuesday, including about 71% of the ICU beds in the 16 referral hospitals in the state. About 46% of the non-ICU hospital beds are now inhabited in Utah.

A total of 741,297 vaccines were administered in the state, compared to 721,029 on Monday. Of these, 263,173 are second doses of the vaccine.

The new numbers point to a 0.1% increase in positive cases since Monday. Of the 2,214,506 people tested for COVID-19 in Utah so far, 16.8% tested positive for COVID-19. The number of tests carried out since the start of the pandemic is now 3,828,322, compared to 14,540 as of Monday. Of these, 5,582 are tests of people who have not been tested for COVID-19 before, according to state data.

The nine deaths reported on Tuesday include:

  • A Davis County man who was between 65 and 84 and was not hospitalized when he died
  • A Salt Lake County woman who was over 85 and a resident of a long-term care facility
  • A Salt Lake County woman who was between 65 and 84 years old and was hospitalized when she died
  • A Summit County man between the ages of 45 and 64 who was admitted to hospital when he died
  • A man from Tooele County who was between 65 and 84 and was admitted to hospital when he died
  • A man from Utah County who was over 85 and a resident of a long-term care facility
  • A Utah County man who was between the ages of 65 and 84 and was hospitalized when he died
  • A Washington County man who was between 65 and 84 years old and was admitted to the hospital when he died
  • A Weber County woman who was between 45 and 64 years old and was admitted to the hospital when she died

The total number Tuesday in Utah confirmed 371,979 cases, with 14,753 hospitalizations and 1,949 deaths due to the disease. An estimated 353,737 cases in Utah COVID-19 are considered recovery, the Department of Health reports.

The government of Utah, Spencer Cox, will provide its weekly pandemic update, according to its office, at 11:00 a.m. Thursday at 11:00 p.m.
