Macy’s has notified employees at about 45 of its department stores that they will close mid-year, CNBC has learned.

The closures are part of a previously announced plan by Macy’s to close 125 locations by 2023, which the retailer outlined last February.

“As previously announced, Macy’s is committed to expanding our shopping fleet by concentrating our existing retail locations in popular and well-traded A and B shopping malls,” a spokesman told CNBC.

“That’s why today we announced several store closures that are in line with the guidance we gave in February 2020,” she said. “These closures bring us closer to achieving the right mix of stores in malls.”

Liquidation sales have already begun in some locations, and the rest will begin later this month. A list of the approximately 45 locations could not be immediately obtained by CNBC.

Macy’s operates 544 of its namesake stores, along with 34 Bloomingdale locations, 19 Bloomingdale stores and 166 Bluemercury stores, according to its website.
