ShopRite has announced that coronavirus vaccines will be distributed at pharmacies in 39 of its New Jersey grocery stores.
The grocery market said pharmacies would start by vaccinating health workers included in the first distribution phase, focusing on people at greatest risk for exposure. The company expects to expand access to the general public as additional groups become eligible.
“We are excited to be part of the initial stages of this unprecedented public health campaign as we vaccinate leading health workers in the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Jeffrey Mondelli, Vice President of Pharmacy, Health and Beauty at Wakefern Food Corp., the logistics, distribution and trading item for ShopRite stores, in a news release.
The store locations were selected in collaboration with the Department of Health in New Jersey, which added the ShopRite locations to the state’s complete list of distribution sites.
More than 100,000 people have received a vaccine for the coronavirus in New Jersey since the first doses were administered nearly three weeks ago, health officials said Monday. Some health workers at Newark University Hospital also became the first people in the state to receive the second dose of vaccine on Monday morning.
The state prioritized leading health care workers and residents of long-term care functions in its first group of vaccine recipients.
ShopRite said the pharmacies initially sent the Moderna vaccine, which requires two vaccinations. Vaccinations are only available by appointment and the cost is not payable, the company said.
“We are ready to serve and will continue to provide increased access to this life-saving vaccine as new comprehensive guidelines are announced by the CDC,” Mondelli said.
