SAN DIEGO (AP) – A driver plowed through a crowd on a sidewalk in downtown San Diego on Monday morning, killing three people and injuring six others, including two who were taken in critical condition, police said. .
The driver – who was identified by authorities only as a 71-year-old man – appeared to be disabled when his car suddenly moved off the street near a community college shortly after 9am and went up the sidewalk shortly before returning to the road. , said San Diego Police Chief David Nisleit.
Nisleit said the driver identified him to police and he was arrested. Police said earlier he was trying to flee.
Several ambulances responded to the scene near City College, where on a typical morning it is a busy area where students walk past. There is also a large homeless population in the area.
