Authorities have not yet issued a formal statement as to why they were called to the home, who may have made the call or been reported to police, but according to the Wichita Eagle, Gordon Ramsay, Wichita police chief, told local media said the homeowners asked authorities to check the vacant house after seeing that the various windows were open, which made them think that someone might be inside and that officers were getting a key to the house so they could gain access.

“After the officer entered the residence, three officers sustained injuries due to an explosion from an unknown device,” authorities said in a statement on social media.

The Wichita police station said the three officers were immediately transported to a local hospital for treatment while the WPD SWAT team and the bomb squad investigated.

A tweet from the Wichita Police Department said “negotiators are still at the scene trying to negotiate”, but it is unclear who they negotiated with and why negotiators were needed in the first place.
