2nd strong earthquake strikes today from the Loyalty Islands; no tsunami threat to Hawaii

A second earthquake struck near the Loyalty Islands in New Caledonia this morning.

A preliminary earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 is according to the American geological survey at 11:24 at Hawaii time, 258 kilometers east of Vao, Southern Province, New Caledonia, at a depth of 10.2 kilometers recorded.

As with the earlier earthquake, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was no tsunami threat to Hawaii and that no devastating tsunami was expected in the Pacific.

A major earthquake struck early this morning in the southwestern Pacific Ocean near the Loyalty Islands in New Caledonia, but posed no tsunami threat to Hawaii.

The 7.7 magnitude earthquake was recorded at a depth of 10.2 kilometers at Hawaii time, 257 miles east of Vao, Southern Province, New Caledonia, at a depth of 10.2 kilometers, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

“There is no tsunami threat to Hawaii,” the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said in a bulletin and a devastating Pacific tsunami is not expected.

No serious injuries were reported immediately.
