279 girls rescued days after abduction by armed ‘bandits’ at Nigeria International School

Nearly 300 abducted students have been rescued in the state of Zamfara in Nigeria, the governor announced on Tuesday. The girls are now waiting to be seen by health workers before being reunited with their families. “Alhamdulillah! (God is praised!) It gladdens my heart to announce the abducted students, “Zamfara government tweeted Bello Matawalle on Tuesday. “I urge all well-meaning Nigerians to be happy with us, because our daughters are safe now.” Matawelle said ‘bandits’ were responsible for the abduction.

The students, all girls, were abducted on Friday when gunmen stormed the Government Girls Junior Secondary School in Jangebe at about 01:30 local time. Residents who live near the school told The Daily Beast that they had reported “foreign men” in the area to the authorities before the attack. At least 315 girls were reported missing on Friday, and it is unclear why only 279 were found this week.
