2022 BMW M5 CS is the fastest production car to date

Gold wheels and yellow LEDs. Hell yes.

BMW on Tuesday unveiled its fastest-ever production engine, the 2022 M5 CS. Based on the already-extreme M5 competition, the CS increases power, lowers weight and adds a few rad design touches to differentiate it from the pack. That said, you are definitely paying for the privilege.

The M5 CS uses the same twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 as the rest of the M5 series. Here, this engine delivers 627 horsepower, an increase of 10 hp over the M5 competition. The torque is unchanged at 553 pounds, and the power gets the wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission. BMW says the M5 CS can accelerate to 60 km / h in 2.9 seconds – there is the fastest specification ever – even if it is only 0.2 seconds less than the competition’s 3.1-second times. The CS gets a revised exhaust with stainless steel tips, so it should also sound nice under full acceleration.

Like the competition, the M5 CS has an active four-wheel drive system with torque between the front and rear axles. The standard Active M rear differential can further shift the power between the two rear wheels, which is especially handy because the CS, like all M5s, can switch off its front axle and work in a rear-wheel drive.

Thanks to the increased use of carbon fiber in the body panels and in the car, the M5 CS is 230 pounds lighter than the M5 competition, although it is still not lightweight, it is 4114 pounds. The roof, redesigned canopy (which also looks a bit Charger Redeye to our liking), the front splitter, the rear diffuser, the spoiler and the mirror caps are all done in carbon fiber, as well as the bonnet.

To better handle the slight thrust and reduced weight, the CS makes small adjustments to the M5 Competition’s springs and dampers, which are already a bit stiffer than the base M5. A further blessing for the handling is the availability of spicy Pirelli P Zero Corsa summer tires, which measure 275 / 35R20 front and 285 / 35R20 outside. These tires are a free option, and you will definitely want them. The 20 inch gold wheels are, thankfully, standard, and you can get gold brake flaps for the carbon ceramic brakes.

Rear passengers get their own varieties of bucket seats.

Speaking of which, there are a whole bunch of golden accents on the M5 CS. In addition to the wheels, you will find this gold-bronze finish on the grille and badges. Oh yes, and the LED running lights illuminate yellow instead of white, which is a great race-inspired style. It all looks pretty good against the frozen deep green paint of the car pictured here.

Inside the M5, the CS has a four-seater setup with separate buckets. The carbon fiber front seats have a lot of reinforcement and look supportive, and don’t worry, the M5 logos on the front seats are illuminated. You’ll find CS badges throughout the cabin, as well as Alcantara suede. BMW’s latest iDrive 7 infotainment technology has been placed on a large touch screen on top of the dash, and a digital range also contains more important information.

Now, the great reservation: the 2022 BMW M5 CS costs $ 142,995, including $ 995 for the destination. That means it’s $ 30,900 more expensive than the M5 competition, which is a significant increase. Yes, you have cool seats, gold finish and an extra 10 hp extra, but things like the gold wheels and P Zero Corsa tires can probably be obtained much less. It’s a similar story to the M2 CS: cool car, but really expensive. Nevertheless, BMW is only presenting the M5 CS for the 2022 model year and the first American cars will arrive in the second half of 2021.
