2021 NFL Coaching Carousel Tracker: Chargers Dismiss Anthony Lynn, Jaguars Dump Doug Marrone Plus Latest Updates

With the end of the NFL season on the horizon, that means the league’s annual coaching tension is about to step high. When the season kicked off in September, there were 32 head coaches wandering around the sidelines around the NFL, but not all of those guys will return in 2021.

In fact, we know all three coaches who are definitely not returning, and it’s Bill O’Brien, Dan Quinn and Matt Patricia who were all hailed during the season. Three shootings this season were the highest number the NFL has seen since 2010 when four coaches were released.

In the off-season of 2021, there could be as many as six teams looking for a new coach, and the number could jump even higher if we see any surprise. We will keep up to date with all the latest news when teams start looking for the right coach. To keep you up to date with the latest layoffs, rumors and rentals, you need to keep an eye on the coaching staff below.

Discharge: Bill O’Brien
Rent: TBD

O’Brien was the first coach to be sacked this season, and the move came back in October when the Texans decided to give him a pink slip after a 0-4 start that saw losses for Chiefs, Steelers and Ravens include. Since then, the Texans hired a search firm to help them find their new coach. According to ESPN.com, the search firm recommend it The Seahawks’ offensive coordinator, Brian Schottenheimer, as someone Houston should consider appointing. It is also believed that Houston will keep an eye on Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy. Although the Texans did not formally interview one of the candidates, they did at least two interviews, and these came with former NFL head coaches Marvin Lewis and Jim Caldwell. The Texans also have an open GM track and the belief is that they will fulfill the role before appointing a new coach.

Discharge: Dan Quinn
Rent: TBD

Since the shooting of Dan Quinn in a 0-5 start in October, the Falcons have been playing things near the vest over whom they next appoint. In the time since Quinn was released, the team has only formally interviewed one candidate, and that is interim coach Raheem Morris. According to NFL.com, the Falcons apparently also had their eye on defense coordinators Todd Bowles (Buccaneers) and Brandon Staley (Rams), as well as the attacking coordinator of Titans, Arthur Smith. Although the Falcons have yet to set up an interview with one of the three, they did two interviews for Monday. One of the interviews will be with 49ers defense coordinator Robert Saleh, while the other will be with Chiefs attacking coordinator Eric Bieniemy. The Falcons will also be in the market for a GM after firing Thomas Dimitroff.

Discharge: Matt Patricia
Rent: TBD

The Lions gave the NFL a Thanksgiving surprise when the team decided to fire Patricia just two days after their 41-25 result against the Texans on Turkey Day. Since the shooting, the Lions have conducted just one interview and that took place in late December with former Bengal coach Marvin Lewis. According to Fox Sports, the Lions will be interested in talking to several candidates, including coach Darrell Bevell, Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy and 49ers defense coordinator Robert Saleh. The Lions are also expected to watch Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald, according to Jason La Canfora, CBS Sports NFL Insider.

Discharge: Adam Gase

Gase tried to save his job at the end of the season with two big wins over the Rams and Browns, but that was not enough to convince the Jets to keep him. Gase was sacked on Sunday after just two seasons with the team where he was only 9-23. If Gase is out, you should not be surprised if the Jets look at the university ranks. When the position started two years ago, they interviewed several coaches before appointing Gase, and it would not be surprising if they interviewed a number of candidates from the college group this time. Jason La Canfora, CBS Sports NFL Insider, reported that the team may be interested in Pat Fiztgerald of the Northwest and Dan Mullen of Florida. The Jets could also pursue Marvin Lewis because of his ties to current New York general manager Joe Douglas. Douglas also likes Wish Martindale, Ravens’ defense coordinator, and it would not be surprising if he reached out to him. Two other names to note are offensive coordinators Brian Daboll (Bills) and Arthur Smith (Titans)

Discharge: Doug Marrone

When the Jaguars fired general manager Dave Caldwell in November, it looked like it was only a matter of time before they would fire Marrone, and that’s exactly what happened Monday. Marrone was stolen in Jacksonville after a season in which the Jaguars finished 1-15 to achieve the best overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft. Jason La Canfora, CBS Sports NFL Insider, previously reported that if Marrone is fired, the Jags will seriously consider hiring former Ohio coach Urban Meyer. According to NFL.com, Meyer and Ryan Day, the current coach of OSU, will both be considered for the open Jaguars position. One thing to remember about this job is that it is one of the most appealing in the NFL. Not only does Jacksonville sit on the first overall pick in the 2021 draft, but the Jags also have plenty of leeway to work with for next season, which means a new coach – and a new GM – can make things look good turn. quickly.

Discharge: Anthony Lynn

The Chargers have won their last four games of the season, but that was not enough to save Lynn’s job. Although Lynn led this team to the playoffs in 2018, the Chargers head coach has not been good the past two seasons. Not only has he been 11-21 over the past two years, but the Chargers also had the most one-score losses during that period, and many came due to questionable coaching at the end of the game. With Justin Herbert on the rankings, it’s going to be a coveted task and one name to look at is Brian Daboll. The offensive coordinator of the Bills went to high school with Tom Telesco, Chargers general manager, and it will not be surprising if Telesco reaches out in the near future.

Coaches expect to return

Zac Taylor: Although the Bengals are expected to make several changes to their coaching staff this season, Taylor will not be one of them. Not only does he have a close relationship with Joe Burrow, but he also has a win over the Steelers, which means a lot in Cincinnati. Basically, Taylor is definitely going to have another year to figure things out.

Doug Pederson: Despite an ugly season, Pederson is expected to keep his job. According to ESPN.com, Pederson will meet with Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie on Tuesday and during the meeting they will talk about their vision for 2021. One of the main topics is probably Carson Wentz, who apparently does not want to. be more in Philadelphia. ESPN reported that Wentz is demanding a trade, and a big reason for that is due to his broken relationship with Pederson.
