There was a time when Apple’s naming conventions made sense. The MacBook Air was thinner than the MacBook, and the iPad Air was thinner than the iPad Pro. Things are much more confusing these days, with the ‘Air’ moniker no longer a guarantee for the thinnest or lightest device. But if there are new leaks, the MacBook Air may soon live up to its name again.
According to Bloomberg, Apple is working on a thinner and lighter 13-inch MacBook Air, which could be released as early as this year. Last year’s M1 MacBook Air is currently one of our best laptops for graphic design, but anything that makes it an even more portable power station can only be a good thing for digital artists going on (oh, remember that are you on your way?).
New story: Apple plans a redesigned, thinner / lighter 13-inch MacBook Air with next-generation M-chip, MagSafe, two USB-C ports. Release it already in the second half of 2021. Apple has also considered abolishing a 15-inch version. This and more: https://t.co/kOpqkSYds022 January 2021
Bloomberg says the new MacBook Air will have a thinner and lighter body with a significantly reduced casing around the 13-inch screen. According to the report, Apple has also considered a 15-inch version, but “will not continue with this for the next generation. According to rumors for the upcoming MacBook Pro, MagSafe charging will reportedly return to the new MacBook Air.
A thinner and lighter MacBook Air sounds to us like a winner. When Steve Jobs picked up the first model from a brown envelope on stage in 2008, its thinness was falling. But with a design that has been largely unchanged since 2018, the Air no longer looks so ornate. Indeed, even Apple itself produced a thinner machine in the form of a small 12-inch MacBook, which is probably more airy than the Air (told you things were confusing).
A smaller design can also help differentiate the Air from the MacBook Pro. Both current 13-inch laptops have the same width and depth (30.41 x 21.24 cm) and the Air is only 0.11 kg lighter. With both incredible performance thanks to Apple’s new M1 chip, the choice between the two is definitely no achievement. If the Air is indeed getting thinner and lighter, there is at least an obvious choice for creative people looking for the most portable machine.
In 2020, we were disappointed with the lack of new Mac designs. From the MacBook Air and Pro to the iMac, each new model has a familiar look. But with the 2021 iMac, MacBook Pro and now the MacBook Air rumored to be getting a fresh coat of paint in the next few months, the only possible explanation is that Apple Creative Bloq has read very carefully.
However, if performance is most important to you, you do not have to wait for an amazing Mac experience. We’ve been surprised to see that there are already some unmatched M1 MacBook deals coming out, and you can find more brilliant M1 Mac deals below.
