2,000 flights canceled in Denver after heavy snowstorm

DENVER (AP) – More than 2,000 flights were canceled at Denver International Airport over the weekend as a major snowstorm hit the region.

The National Weather Service has issued a warning for a winter storm, saying it expects 46-61 cm of heavy, wet snow in Denver and Boulder from Saturday afternoon to Sunday evening. Some areas along the hills of the Front Range were expected to be up to 76 centimeters long.

The Colorado Department of Transportation has warned that road closures are very likely and has asked people not to undertake unnecessary trips. The highways that would be most affected included Interstate 25 from Colorado Springs to Wyoming, including Denver and Monument Hill; I-70 in Limon; and I-76 to Ft. Morgan, the department said.

Denver International had a busy morning on Saturday with passengers trying to overcome the storm, but about 750 flights were canceled later that day, airport spokeswoman Emily Williams said. Almost all Sunday flights were also canceled – almost 1,300.
