2 MDOC officers injured during prisoner attack at Baraga correctional facility

BARAGA, Michigan (WLUC) – Two officers from the Department of Corrections in Michigan (MDOC) were injured Wednesday during a detention in the Baraga Correctional Facility.

According to MDOC spokesman Chris Gautz, a prisoner with maximum security around February 12 attacked a rear-end correctional officer with a weapon and seriously injured him.

Gautz says the officer was able to restrain the prisoner, despite his injuries, along with another officer who was also injured in the attack.

All the prisoners were placed in segregation and the injured officers were taken to the hospital for treatment.

“The Michigan State Police have been contacted and both MSP and the MDOC are continuing to investigate the incident,” Gautz said.

Both officers were treated Wednesday night and discharged from the hospital, Gautz said.
