Two Boston construction workers were killed Wednesday in what police and the city’s mayor described as a ‘tragic incident’.
The men were found in a hole in a construction site in downtown Boston after first responders received a report around 8 a.m. about two pedestrians hit by a truck, authorities said. According to police, both victims were pronounced dead at the scene.
“My heart aches when we send our thoughts and prayers to the families and loved ones who are mourning their loss after the tragic incident this morning,” Boston Mayor Marty Walsh said in a statement. tweet. “I am sad that two hard-working people lost their lives so suddenly and tragically this morning, and we will work tirelessly to understand how this happened to create safer conditions in the future.”

Boston Fire Commissioner John Dempsey said a truck had to be moved before the first reaction could be dropped into the hole to determine the conditions of the workers. Once they were in the hole, the effort shifted from a rescue to recovery mission, he added.
Boston Interim Police Commissioner Gregory Long said whether the men were hit in the hole after being hit or working in the hole at the time.
Suffolk District Attorney is leading the investigation to determine if a crime took place, with the help of city police and the Federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration, District Attorney Rachael Rollins added.
“This is really a sad, sad incident on what started today as a beautiful day,” Walsh told reporters on Wednesday.

Walsh also tweeted that the city “immediately suspended the only other admissions site on the Atlantic Coast.”
“Until a thorough investigation is completed, the company will not be allowed to perform work in the city,” he said.
