Mexican police have found 19 bodies – many of them burned and shot – in a remote area near the U.S. border known for violent smuggling.
Authorities said the bodies were found in an uninhabited area of Tamaulipas, about 40 kilometers south of Rio Grande City, Texas.
When officers responded to a tip-off about a burning vehicle on Friday, officials discovered the bodies inside and behind a burnt-out pickup truck.
A second charred vehicle was found at the scene.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that the cause of death was shots fired by firearms and that the bodies were set on fire,” prosecutors said.
“One of the lines of inquiry is that the events could have taken place in a place other than the discovery.”
No bullet casings were found at the scene.
The area is known for “ongoing fighting between rival criminals transporting drugs, weapons and migrants,” an anonymous source close to the investigation told Reuters.
