The state does not report a total number of “recovered” patients with coronavirus. As of Saturday, 6,153 Floridians are currently hospitalized for a primary diagnosis of COVID-19, with a condition of 72,135 being admitted to the hospital for treatment at some point.

Vaccination efforts continue across the state. On Friday, 19,200 more patients received their first dose of vaccine in Florida, for a total of 1,354,584. Meanwhile, 12,824 more people received their second and final dose, meaning 296,782 completed both rounds.

The number of new cases usually decreased in the fall, reflecting the number of tests given. But it started to increase again.

The rate of positive new tests declined from the summer peak and remained below 10% for a few months, but reached again during the holiday period until 2021. It was 6.62% on Friday, the most recent date available.

After peaking in July, the number of deaths in August also started a downward trend that continued until November – although “significant delays” in reporting data, as the state says, the interpretation of short-term trends from the statistics are less reliable. The 272 new deaths reported Friday were the largest increase in the single-day pandemic.

Editor’s note: The number of new cases and deaths reported each day does not necessarily reflect the day the case was confirmed. The state says some private testing labs dump large amounts of test results that include cases from previous days, and it can take days or weeks to validate data. Statistics for today and past days are likely to change in the future as the state reviews more cases and updates retrospective data.

The number of deaths in the state represents permanent residents of Florida who died from COVID-19.
