With Thursday’s milestone, DuckDuckGo is on track to do about 90 million daily average searches for January.

By comparison, DuckDuckGo averaged about 52 million daily average searches in January 2020. This means that this month’s numbers represent an increase of 73% year-on-year.

To further put this record growth into perspective, here are the previous year-on-year increases in daily average searches:

  • January 2019 to January 2020 – 52% increase
  • January 2018 to January 2019 – 62% increase
  • January 2017 to January 2018 – 61% increase
  • January 2016 to January 2017 – 30% increase

The growth of DuckDuckGo is not limited to the search on the internet, as the mobile app is more popular than ever before.

This past week, it peaked at 7 in the iOS App Store charts for all free apps and # 1 of all utilities.

That’s right, DuckDuckGo is officially the # 2 search engine on mobile devices in the US. On the desktop, Bing and Yahoo are in the # 4 position. However, there is less room for a search engine to grow on computers as more searches occur on mobile devices.

DuckDuckGo’s main selling point over other search engines is its privacy features. Users can search without collecting their personal information and selling it to advertisers.

Recent events have strengthened the acceptance of privacy-based programs. As DuckDuckGo rises through the App Store range, so do encrypted messaging apps like Signal and Telegram.

At the time of this writing, Signal and Telegram are # 1 and # 2 respectively in the US App Store.

As people become more aware of how companies use their data, it seems that they are making conscious decisions to choose different services.

Antitrust investigations by companies like Facebook, Amazon, Apple and Google have put their privacy policies at the forefront. As a result, people sign up to big tech if they agree to their terms of service.

Alternative search engines, social media programs and messaging programs are all increasing. Whether the growth is sustainable, we will find out in time. It is possible that users will find greater satisfaction in the services they originally used.

Since it relates to DuckDuckGo, its growth has been steady enough to suggest that it will continue to do so. As I showed earlier, DuckDuckGo’s journey to 100 million searches a day took years to reach. This is not something that happened overnight.

This would be a great time for DuckDuckGo to invest in more features that bring it closer to a true 1: 1 alternative to other search engines. We’ll see if this increase in daily searches in the near future brings some updates.
