The victim was in a serious condition after the shooting.
A 1-year-old is in a serious condition after being shot in the head during an apparent incident in Chicago, officials said.
Police raided Lake Shore Drive around 11 a.m. Tuesday.
Shots were fired for about two blocks along the highway, during which an almost 2-year-old child was hit in the head, Cmdr. Jake Alderden of the Chicago District 1st District told reporters a few hours after the incident. He said several casings were recovered over the two blocks.
The drivers appear to be ‘completely unknown to each other’, Alderden said.
“There was possibly a dispute over someone who did not want to leave anyone in a traffic lane,” he said.
The vehicle with the child drove on before crashing into Lake Shore Drive shortly thereafter.
A Good Samaritan took the toddler and other occupants in the car to the Northwest Memorial Hospital, police said. From there, he was transferred to Lurie Children’s Hospital, where he was in critical condition, Alderden said.
Police took a gun out of the car and determined if it had been fired during the incident.
The police district plans to release a description of the car involved in the incident, Alderden said.
Mayor Lori Lightfoot said detectives have a suspect and are ‘actively behind the other car’.
“Every time someone is shot in Chicago, of course, it’s tragic, especially if it’s a child,” the mayor told a news conference Tuesday afternoon. “It was a simple but stupid road rage.”
The Lurie Children’s Hospital official said on Tuesday afternoon that the victim had received full support of critical care, including the use of a ventilator, in the pediatric intensive care unit.
“He is in a serious condition,” said Dr. Marcelo Malakooti, chief medical officer, told reporters during a press conference outside the hospital. “This is a very serious bullet injury.”
The child allegedly sustained one bullet wound and sustained a brain injury, Malakooti said.
“This is a very small situation,” he said. “It can change for us every hour.”
Ja’Mal Green, an activist in Chicago, offers a $ 5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the gunman.
“That should not be our reality,” Green, who is the father of a 2-year-old, said during a media event on Tuesday. “We have to bring this horrible person to justice.”
