Officials announced Monday that one million people have received at least one dose of coronavirus vaccine in New Jersey.
As of Monday morning, 1,003,232 people had received at least one dose of coronavirus vaccine. Of these, 369,113 received both doses.
Both vaccines currently approved for use – Pfizer and Moderna – require two doses that are given three or four weeks apart.
The highest one-day total for vaccine administration was February 4, when more than 60,000 received a shot. Many of the appointments were scheduled for February 1, when only 7,800 doses were handed out during a major snowstorm. There are currently 295 vaccination sites across the country.
Officials said the goal is to vaccinate 70% of the adult population within six months. More than 11% of the state has received at least one dose of the vaccine since vaccination efforts began in late December.
More than 44,700 doses were given to out-of-state residents who work or go to school in New Jersey, according to the state’s dashboard.
Healthcare workers, first responders, over 65, people with certain medical conditions and smokers are currently eligible for the vaccine. Government Phil Murphy said teachers would be among the next group, but did not announce a timing for when that would happen.
The state hit one million doses of the vaccine given on Feb. 8. The number contained both the first and second doses given to about 813,000 people.
The rollout was not yet without hooks. Residents complained about long waiting times, a difficult registration system and the demand far exceeding the limited supply.
Although both vaccines currently approved for emergency use require two shots, it may not be long before residents can be vaccinated with one shot. Johnson & Johnson is currently seeking approval for a single dose vaccine. Approval can be granted in early March.
