1 dead after car crash in a retention dam on Fleming Island, delegates say

FLEMING ISLAND, Fla. One person has died after a vehicle collided with a retention dam in Fleming Island early Sunday morning, according to the Clay County Sheriff’s Office.

The Florida Highway Patrol website shows that troops were called around 3:25 a.m. after the fatal crash in Neptune Park off Thunderbolt Road.

The sheriff said his diving team responded to it. In addition, Clay County Fire and Rescue was at the scene.

Later that morning, a tow truck pulled the car, a silver four-door Nissan Altima, out of the stop dam.

Several neighbors told News4Jax they regularly hear cars speeding on Thunderbolt Road leading to the park where the dam is located. They said Sunday around 2 a.m. was no different.

“They just rush up and down the street, and it’s very scary,” said a neighbor who did not want to be identified. “It’s right behind the school and there are a lot of small children in this community.”

The Highway Patrol is leading the investigation.
