1 dead, 2 detained during shooting near Boise State University

Police in Boise, Idaho, say they are arresting two suspects in a fatal shooting that took place near a student complex of Boise State University

BOISE, Idaho – Two suspects were arrested in a fatal shooting near the Boise State University campus, police said early Tuesday.

Neither the victim nor the suspects are current students or employees of Boise State University, the university said in a statement.

Although warnings were sent out after the shooting to shelter students due to a shooting near a residence hall, the college later said in a statement that the shooting did not take place on campus in an urban setting.

Officers responded to a call about 11 a.m. Monday about shots fired, Boise police tweeted. They found a man in the street with gunshot wounds who was taken to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries, a police statement said.

A white passenger vehicle was seen fleeing the area after the shooting, and a while later, officers tried to pick up a similar car about 3.2 kilometers from the shooting incident.

One man ran out of the car, but was arrested a few blocks away, the statement said. Police said another suspect in the area was also arrested after officers chased him on foot.

The identity of the victim and the suspect was not immediately disclosed. Police also did not release details on how the shooting unfolded.

Newspapers reported that the university’s BroncoAlert messaging system had warned the campus community that there was a shooting in the vicinity of Jade Hall, which had student housing. A second warning urged people to take refuge in their place. A full message was sent early Tuesday, less than an hour later. The university said the shooting did not take place on campus property.

Boise State University is one of Idaho’s three public universities, with nearly 20,000 full-time and part-time students. The campus is in downtown Boise, surrounded by neighborhoods and local businesses, and it is known to sports fans for its blue soccer grass.

The university said in a statement that counseling services are available for students and staff members affected by the shooting.

“The university community is saddened by this loss of life and expresses its deepest condolences to the victim’s family and loved ones,” the statement said.
