Splatoon 3say revealed yesterday surprised many people, both because there was little indication in the past that the water shot would get a third delivery, and because of the presence of a upside down Eiffel Tower in the trailer. No, your eyes do not deceive you: Splatoon takes place on earth, thousands of years after the world we know was destroyed by a climate apocalypse.

Hints about the Splatoon World’s cruel past go back to the series’ arrival in 2015, but this story is mostly limited to Sunken Scrolls, set apart in single player, which for most people took a back seat for sweet, sweet multiplayer -competition. . Although these collectibles mostly deal with silly topics such as Inkling biology and what happens to the multicolored goop that covers the battlefield after every game, they also set out the terrifying swan song of mankind 12,000 years before the games.

The first idea (pun) definitely mean) that Splatoon is about more than just squid wars that took place in the tenth phase of the first entry, thanks to a Sunken Scroll that explains how the game’s Inkling species evolved over the years.

“With creatures from the surface driven to extinction by rising sea levels, the ancestors of Inklings were able to drag their ten-footed bodies on the deserted land. This is how the mollusk started. ā€

“Creatures of the surface” sounds awfully much like humans, no? Add to that an image that suggests that the squid we know and love in the real world served as the ancestors for the Inkling race, and it immediately begins to feel Splatoon takes place on Earth.

“What is this? It looks like the owner of that shoe store! Could there have been an ancient creature that devoured shrimp as food ?! It was indeed a frightening thought …”

A dozen phases later, another Sunken Scroll turns out to be a menu of a long lost age before Inklings wandered around on dry ground, suggesting a fried shrimp that looks strikingly like the guy selling you sweet kicks. Splatoon‘s main pivot.

‘Although academic circles warn of rising sea levels, policymakers are ignoring them. At this rate, human civilization may be lost under the tide. Will even this hairy man be consumed by the raging ocean? ā€

The last few sunk roles are where things get very clear. They are even attributed to people, who speak of an impending disaster that sounds all too familiar for what we encounter in the real world.

A 12,000-year-old fossil of a creature with a strange internal skeleton. Its small skull indicates that the creature was probably primitive with little intelligence. It seems to have been fossilized in the middle of some sort of ritual. ‘

It’s literally a human skeleton buried while playing Wii U. Real subtly, Nintendo.

‘Oh, my dear Judd … It seems like the day has finally arrived. This capsule is designed to be cryogenically sealed for 10,000 years. Goodbye, my tiny kitten. May your meow resound through the ages. ‘

And finally a little insight into how Judd, the cat who judges all the judgment Splatoon matches, come live in a world ruled by cephalopods.

‘Oh, Judd. If your hairstyle reopens in the future, you may find yourself alone. If this is the case, I ask you to re-label the capsule. Oh dear Judd, I just hope you can forgive me for everything I’ve been through. ‘

Unfortunately, the Sunken rolls in Splatoon 2 do not keep up with this tradition, with the exception of a single entry from Judd’s former human owner, but both games are filled with a variety of subtle tips beyond the ones I’ve documented here.

With the imminent release of the Splatoon 3 the announcement and the strangely located Eiffel Tower, the franchise’s post-apocalyptic handrails are now beginning to emerge. It has been said that it is strange to see the Inklings in a dusty, Mad Max environment after previous games mentioned that the water levels are still rising and the dominant species is riding in the wheels.

I think we will have to wait until next year to learn it is all over, but I hope Nintendo continues to push these themes. Not only does it give a wonderful taste, but it can also be just what people in the real world need to recognize the dangerous path we are all on.
