Xbox Series X and S owners start Dolby Vision HDR testing for games

Microsoft is making its promise to bring Dolby Vision HDR games to the Xbox Series X and Series S, if only for a handful of users. As Forbes reports, the players noticed that the latest Xbox Insider Alpha version (2104) enables Dolby Vision for Series X and Series S titles. It’s only available for a few games, including Borderlands 3, Rat 5, Halo: Masterpiece Collection and Wreck Festival. However, it turns out to be effective – testers said the Dolby image quality was more “refined” compared to the regular HDR10, probably due to the dynamic data that the HDR footage adjusts frame-by-frame.

The company has confirmed Forbes that it put Dolby Vision to the test and ‘soon’ teased general availability, but did not reduce the timing. It has so far committed to launching the feature somewhere in 2021.

Dolby Vision support could give the latest Xbox consoles the edge over the PlayStation 5, which is currently limited to HDR10. With that said, it may not be a system vendor. You need a TV (sorry, Samsung fans) and supporting games to see the improved graphics. The upgraded HDR may only come into its own when there are enough TVs and games that you can usually assume that Vision is available.
