US records more than 3900 Covid deaths in new 24-hour record: Johns Hopkins

WASHINGTON: The United States on Tuesday broke its own record for the number of daily deaths to Covid-19 on Tuesday, with a record of 3,936 deaths within 24 hours, according to Johns Hopkins University.
The country worst hit by the pandemic in the world also recorded 250,173 new cases in the period to Tuesday at 20:30 (01:30 GMT), the records of the University of Baltimore showed.
That brings the U.S. to more than 21 million cases and 357,067 deaths in total since the start of the pandemic.
The number of people admitted to hospital is also the highest since the start of the pandemic, with more than 131,000 patients occupying beds due to Covid-19, according to data from the Covid Tracking Project.
The situation is particularly dire in the south and west of the country.
Ambulance workers in Los Angeles have been told to stop transporting some patients to hospital with a very low chance of survival and to limit oxygen use as Covid cases overwhelm medical sources.
The previous record for one-day deaths was set six days ago, with more than 3,920 deaths.
The United States has faced a huge increase in business over the past few months. Since the end of November, the number of daily deaths has increased dramatically, regularly exceeding 2,000 and often 3,000 deaths per day.
An expected surge brought together by holidays is expected to further aggravate the situation.
The richest country in the world is finally relying on the vaccination campaign, which began in mid-December, to overcome the epidemic.
But so far less than two percent of the population has been covered, with 4.8 million people receiving a first injection.
On Tuesday, Elected President Joe Biden, who will take office on January 20, spoke to his future team responsible for the health crisis.
A number of options to accelerate the delivery of vaccines – including the possibility of increasing the role of the federal government – are being discussed, according to a statement.
