The congressman argues against DC and says he has no car dealers (he does)

Hice, a Republican in Georgia who has been in Congress since 2015, has announced that he is running for Georgia’s secretary of state. He received the approval of former President Donald Trump.

Hice then argued that the District of Columbia should not be a state, in part because it does not have a car dealership. He then apologized after being told that DC did have car dealers – although he explained that he still did not know where to get one.

Hice delivered his speech during a hearing on House committee on oversight and reform on a bill that would make Columbia District the 51st state. The district has about 700,000 residents, but does not have voting members of Congress – only one delegate in the House of Representatives.

Hice, who warned that DC is getting special funding from the federal government, said the country’s founders want to prevent the district from becoming ‘first among states’. He continues: “DC would be the only state, the only state, without an airport, without a car dealer, without a capital, without a landfill …”

Besides having DC car dealerships, this would be shown by a Google search or a visit to the DC Department of Motor Vehicles website – or perhaps a leisurely ride in the city.

Democratic Representative Gerald Connolly of Virginia, who denounces the “absurdity” of arguments against state capture, later told the committee that car dealers exist in DC. When Hice took his turn again, he said, “If there’s a car dealer in DC, I’m sorry I was wrong. I do not know where it is.”

These are multiple traders, not a single trader. But anyway, Hice seems to be untouched by his mistake. He repeated the rest of his previous list, warning that DC would become a state without a capital, an airport or a landfill.

For the record: DC is less than an hour’s drive from three major airports, one of which is connected to the metro system that serves DC and one of which is expected to be connected to the metro system next year.

We are going to ignore that car dealers and airports did not exist when the Constitution was written.
