Terry Porter as Head Coach of the University of Portland

Former Portland Trail Blazers All-Star Terry Porter has been fired as head coach at the University of Portland. UP today released an announcement delivered by ESPN’s Jeff Borzello.

“I would like to thank Coach Porter for his service to the University,” Scott Leykam, vice president of athletics, said in a statement. ‘The timing of these changes is never ideal, especially with all the disruptions this season caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Ultimately, it was decided that it was best to move forward now and focus on the future of the program and the search for the next head coach.”

According to the article, the former Trail Blazer has been head coach since 2016 and the team has not yet had a wishful season under his leadership.

Terry Porter was selected 24th overall by the Trail Blazers in 1985. He played in Portland for a decade and appeared with the team twice in the NBA Finals, in 1990 and in 1992. He played in the NBA for 17 years. In 2008, the Blazers retired the number 30 in his honor. Porter was also inducted into the Oregon Gymnasium two years later, in 2010.
