Stephen Colbert was inaugurated Wednesday night after the inauguration of President Joe Biden and the feeling of deep relief in the room was palpable.
“Well, you did it,” he told his Late show viewers. ‘You’ve survived the last four years and your reward? A bright, new, old president. ‘ After admitting that he ‘cried a lot’ during the day, Colbert said: ‘It was extremely emotional and not quite as I expected. Because I have to tell you, I have no gloat in me. There is no end zone dance in me. What I feel is a huge relief. ‘
“Today felt normal, even though so much of the day was abnormal,” the host said. But at least, he explained, we now finally acknowledge the reality of the COVID-19 pandemic. “And the strangest feeling is when something is clearly abnormal and someone tries to tell you that it is not,” Colbert added. ‘What we saw today was the opposite of gas lighting. Today was our reality board, and I am for it. ”
As for the new first couple’s large entrance, the host joked: ‘Isn’t it nice? A presidential couple holding hands in a way that does not seem contractually binding. The contrasts with Trump continued as Colbert said, “It’s so strange to hear someone say we’re a great nation without then hearing which of us are radical socialist antiphas who want to destroy our heritage with low flows of toilet.”
And later, ‘It was so nice to have a president with a soul again. The former sold his to the devil and did not even get Georgia out of the deal. ”
Finally, Colbert praised the ‘beautiful, moving words’ of the poet Amanda Gorman, who said that ‘being American is more than a pride we inherit, it is the past in which we walk and how we recover it.’
“Yes, how do you restore the past?” Ask Colbert. ‘Have we tried to reconnect and reconnect with the past? Because it works on all the other things. ”
“But how we fix this country is not the job of the new government alone,” he continued. ‘It depends on all of us, as always, in whatever way we can. And President Biden, Vice President Harris, you have our prayers, our best wishes and all the trust. ”
