SpaceX brings the case of space-obsolete wine back to Earth

This French wine is really out of this world.

The SpaceX capsule will bring a case from Bordeaux back to Earth when it crashes on Wednesday – and it’s not a normal product after aging for more than a year in outer space.

The intoxicating cargo was sent to the International Space Station in November 2019 as part of an experiment launched by a start-up company in Luxembourg.

“Our goal is to tackle the solution of how tomorrow we will have an agriculture that is both organic and healthy and can feed humanity,” said Nicolas Gaume, co-founder of Space Cargo Unlimited.

“And we think space was the key,” he said.

In addition, Gaume added, future lunar or Mars explorers might want some Cabernet Sauvignon with their space line.

“Because I’m French, it’s part of life to have good food and good wine,” he explained.

The 12 bottles are forked and carefully packed in steel cylinders to prevent breakage.

It is part of a larger cargo load containing 320 Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon vines that were launched into space in March and several mice.

The bottled wine will remain sealed until at least next month, when one or two will be opened for a tasting in Bordeaux – followed by months of chemical tests to determine the impact of space on the expensive grape juice.

The SpaceX Dragon capsule should splash Wednesday night.
