Researchers detect Covid-19 variant unique to Kenya, says Nation

Scientists have discovered a coronavirus variant in the East African country that still needs to be detected elsewhere in the world, the Daily Nation reported, citing Charles Agoti, a researcher at the Kenya Medical Research Institute.

The variant was picked up in the southern Taita Taveta province and distributed throughout the country. According to the newspaper, researchers at the institute are still studying whether it can be spread more easily and whether it causes serious diseases.

Since the onset of the pandemic, scientists at the institute have followed up on about 500 genomes, most of which were collected during the second wave, according to the Nation.
