Reporters heard Tom Wilson and Evgeni Malkin’s’ chat-filled ‘chats’ after Tom had a recent hit on Mark Jankowski.

Tom Wilson was whispered Thursday in the Capitals’ 5-2 win over the Penguins for a minor interference. Wilson was penalized after delivering a late hit to Penguins forward Mark Jankowski.

The Capitals shouted from the bench out of frustration that officials had made a call while the Penguins were furious about what they said was another foul hit by Wilson. Penguins center Evgeni Malkin moved on to the penalty spot, while Jankowski struggled to get up and exchanged words with Wilson.

What did they say then?

Malkin ‘just came to talk’, Wilson explained. “If it’s so quiet in there, you can have those conversations.”

According to beat writers who were in the Capital One Arena, the chirping hockey players got more spicy.

Josh Yohe reported that Malkin sarcastically complimented his teammate’s mock partner and Wilson reacted in kind.

Samantha Pell said Wilson is determined that his hit is clean.

Taylor Haase heard Wilson say his hit was ‘two milliseconds’ late.

Stephen Whyno noted that Wilson calls Malkin a clown.

Yohe says Peter Laviolette defended his player.

“I thought it was a big hit, but I’ve never seen it live,” Wilson said. ‘He knocked it out of the air and I immediately completed it through the body. I think it’s a great hockey game, and I’ll see the replay. ‘

The Penguins gave Jankowski an opportunity to comment after the game with forward Brandon Tanev. Both players avoided saying much and did not think about the hit.

“I just hit the bag at their end and I turned around – I was about to change – I was hit,” Jankowski said.

“Obviously we saw the play develop and what happened, and the refs thought it was a penalty kick and they made the call,” Tanev added. “It’s not in our control. It depends on the refs and their judgment and what they want to do in the situation. So we had to keep playing the game and play the game the right way. ”

Wilson would later score the game goal in the third period.

“I thought he was really good,” Peter Laviolette said. “He played fast. He played physically. He was hard. ”
