Registered nurse receives first COVID-19 vaccination at SSM Health in Janesville

Vaccination

JANESVILLE, Wis. Vaccination has begun for health care workers at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital in Janesville.

Registered nurse Claire Kuschel was the first to be vaccinated on Sunday morning.

“This is what we have all been waiting for,” Kuschel said. ‘I asked the infection prevention nurse several times when we were going to get the vaccine and how I could get it. She told me I could start signing up. I was the first one on the list. ”

Kuschel said her life has changed drastically since the onset of the pandemic for both herself and her family.

“It was a difficult time for all of us to deal with it,” she said. ‘Because we know there is not much about this virus, it makes you feel almost helpless. We try to do our best to make them feel better and more comfortable. ”

SSM Health St. Mary’s president Eric Thornton says the 700 healthcare workers are likely to receive the first round of vaccinations within the next two weeks.

“It’s optimism,” he said. ‘This is the next step in the process where we can finally start to be normal again. I think it is also a good sign for our employees that we can give a vaccine that we have wanted to do for some time. It just enables them to stay healthy so that they can take exceptional care of our patients. ‘
