Pentagon police officer on duty shot dead two people he believed were breaking into a car, police said.

The incident occurred at about 5 a.m. in the parking lot of an apartment complex in Takoma Park, Maryland, a suburb about 11 miles from Washington, DC.

Officers responded to a call of shots and they were approached by a Pentagon Force Protection Agency police officer who, according to a statement from Takoma Park police, said he thought a car was being broken into.

“He involved the suspects who did not follow his instructions,” police said in the statement. “The suspects were trying to flee in a vehicle when the officer fired his service weapon.”

Police said shortly afterwards: “Two of the suspects involved have arrived at Prince George’s Hospital, both of whom are suffering from gunshot wounds.”

Both died at the hospital.

It is unclear whether the two people broke into the car.

Pentagon spokeswoman Sue Gough said in a statement to CNN: “I can confirm that a PFPA police officer was involved in a shooting incident early this morning in Takoma Park, Maryland, which resulted in two deaths. has.’

She added: “According to the standard policy, the police officer has been placed on administrative leave, pending the outcome of the investigation. PFPA will also conduct an internal administrative investigation according to the standard policy.”

The Takoma Park Police Department and the Montgomery County Attorneys’ Office are investigating the incident.

Takoma Park police did not want to provide further information.
