Several people were injured after a passenger bus veered off the road and a detour hung in the Bronx in New York.
The New York Police Department told WABC that the incident occurred Thursday at 11:10 p.m. on the Cross Bronx Expressway in University Avenue.
WABC confirmed that at least seven to eight people, including the bus driver, were injured in the crash. Most injuries were minor, although the driver sustained the worst injuries and is in a serious condition.
The New York Fire Department tweeted Friday night that there were nine total injuries, but in a statement they later said only eight people were treated for injuries.
“FDNY units were at the scene of a car accident on University Ave and the Cross Bronx Expressway in the Bronx, where a dental bus collided with the barriers and was hanging on the road on the way in. Nine civilian injuries were reported. time, ”the FDNY wrote on Twitter.
“While responding to this incident, I discussed the information we were receiving and imagined that a bus was hanging off the edge. Officials said the bus fell about 50 feet on the access road.
FDNY deputy chief Paul Hopper, who oversaw medical treatment and transportation at the scene, said: “We have assessed and treated a total of eight patients from this accident. The bus fell about 50 feet on the access road. The patients sustained injuries corresponding to a fall of such great height. ‘
All the injured were transported to a hospital.
Authorities said the driver of the MTA Articulated Bus may have experienced some braking error or not experienced the turn properly.
The bus was across the track to the ground below, where it had to be secured by the FDNY.
Photos shared on social media show how it hangs over the top.
In an audio recording of the FDNY obtained by ABC News, a broadcaster is heard saying, “Continue rescue. We have a toothbrush over the bridge, half hanging from the bridge, there are people inside.”
The intersection is now turned off and the bus is waiting to be towed.
No other vehicles were involved in the crash.
