NVIDIA plans GeForce RTX 3080 SUPER & GeForce RTX 3070 SUPER graphics cards

We saw a bunch of NVIDIA GeForce RTX 30 series graphics card configurations that went through the rumor mill and were canceled shortly thereafter. NVIDIA still seems to be deciding on what to do next with its Ampere range, and as such new rumors are emerging Kopite7kimi (via Videocardz), according to whom, NVIDIA is preparing two brand new SKUs that are possibly powered by the GeForce RTX 3080 SUPER and the GeForce RTX 3070 SUPER.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 SUPER & GeForce RTX 3070 SUPER Reportedly considered, could it contain 16 GB of GDDR6 (X) VRAM?

To begin with, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 SUPER and the GeForce RTX 3070 SUPER will not affect the upcoming card series, which will include the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti and the GeForce RTX 3060. The GeForce RTX 3070 Ti may be a very different story since we heard about this SKU for a while, but nothing has been worded except for some rumor specs. The RTX 3080 Ti and RTX 3070 Ti were also canceled a few times and started again with different specifications.

The GeForce RTX 3080 Ti will be introduced even earlier than the RTX 3070 Ti, so the status of this particular SKU has not yet been confirmed. At the same time, one thing to note is about the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti and GeForce RTX 3060, both of which have much higher memory capacity than their predecessors. The RTX 3080 Ti replaces the RTX 2080 Ti with 9 GB higher VRAM (11 GB vs. 20 GB) and the RTX 3060 replaces the RTX 2060 with twice the memory buffer (6 GB vs. 12 GB). The same can only be the case with the SUPER series that NVIDIA has planned.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 SUPER & RTX 3070 SUPER

We have no concrete specifications of these two chips, but if we go back to earlier rumors, we can see that NVIDIA initially planned higher VRAM variants of both RTX 3080 and RTX 3070 graphics cards. The RTX 3080 is expected to contain 12-16 GB of VRAM, while RTX 3070 is also expected to contain similar amounts of VRAM. However, the plan was scrapped in favor of NVIDIA literally going bunkers with its RTX 3090 design and limiting the rest of the range to 10 GB VRAM because the GDDR6 (X) modules are limited.

By the start of the RTX 3080 Ti, the memory supply will be much better. NVIDIA itself has also confirmed that the offer will be better by the end of the first quarter of 2021, and this is likely when NVIDIA can devise a better plan to release their GeForce RTX series again in a SUPER way.

For this purpose, the GeForce RTX 3080 SUPER and GeForce RTX 3070 SUPER may be the first participants in the series. Similar to the previous generation, NVIDIA does not want to touch the top models because they will be positioned against the competition. It’s the RTX 3080 and sub-assemblies like the RTX 3070 and RTX 3060 Ti, which need a SUPER refresh to tackle AMD’s Radeon RX 6800 and RX 6700 series.

For this purpose alone, NVIDIA can contain 16 GB of GDDR6 (X) memory on both the RTX 3080 SUPER (GDDR6X) and the GeForce 3070 SUPER (GDDR6). In terms of core configurations, this could also change with the GeForce RTX 3070 SUPER which is expected to use the GA103S GPU, while the GeForce RTX 3080 SUPER will retain its GA102 GPU.

An important thing to consider here, however, is the prices. Either NVIDIA offers a price reduction on existing variants and terminates their production to make way for the new cards similar to what they did in the previous generation, or to keep the existing cards and the SUPER variants with a slight to offer premium, it remains to be seen. Lastly, do not expect the SUPER cards soon, as the green team has not finished the original series yet. We can probably expect an announcement around Computex or during the summer, which was also the case with the GeForce RTX 20 SUPER line.
