NC weather: Tornado Watch released for much of Central North Carolina as storms thumbs closer

RALEIGH, NC (WTVD) – Central North Carolina has fallen through numerous tornado warnings, but it appears Thursday night mostly intact as a strong storm system rolls through the region.

Warnings for Durham and Orange counties lapsed Thursday night as severe storms moved quickly out of the area. The latest Tornado warnings for Halifax County and Warren County expired shortly after 8 p.m.

However, many counties, including Wake, Cumberland, Franklin, Granville, Halifax, Harnett, Hoke, Johnston, Nash, Vance, and Warren, remain under Tornado Watch until 9 p.m. Mecklenburg County, Virginia, also have a wait until 9 p.m. stayed.

The counties of Cumberland and Harnett were under warning for severe thunderstorm until 8:15 p.m., when the system moved east.

LATEST WEATHER WEATHER AND WARNINGS

As of 19:30, less than 200 power outages were reported in the Triangle. Just west of the Triangle – in the eastern Greensboro-Burlington area, 2,646 power outages were reported.

Much of North Carolina’s risk of severe weather was downgraded Thursday morning, but severe weather continued to move through the region with several reports of fallen trees and other weather-related problems.

“Just because you see it downgraded, you go, ‘Oh, that’s good. ‘ It is good; it means less chance, but it does mean there’s a pretty good chance of seeing severe weather across the region today … just know that the risk of wind damage really hasn’t diminished that much, “The ABC11 Meteorologist Don” Big Weather, “Schwenneker said.

Chief meteorologist Chris Hohmann said all threats, including tornado, wind and hail (to a lesser extent), should be taken seriously, although we no longer have the “moderate risk”.

Meanwhile, Governor Roy Cooper on Thursday afternoon signed a state of emergency ahead of the expected severe weather in the state.

“This state of emergency will allow the movement of trucks and equipment to respond in emergencies, quickly repair power outages and remove debris after the storm is over,” Cooper said.

“While there is less chance of a tornado, there is a possibility that it could be a strong one,” Big Weather said.

The same system is the system that caused about 25 tornadoes from Oklahoma to Alabama. Fortunately, there are currently no deaths due to the storm.

Once this weather event is over, rain can linger until Friday. It will be windy and colder with temperatures in the 40s. A chance of a rain / snow mix exists near the Virginia border late in the morning, but no congestion is expected.

Saturday and Sunday will be temperatures in the 50s, with more sun on Saturday and more heat on Sunday.
