Mets interested in Trevor Bauer on ‘Shorter Deal’

According to Jon Heyman of MLB network, the New York Mets have indeed explored their paths with respect to the freehand right-hander Trevor Bauer.

This confirms previous reports of dialogue between the two parties after the Mets missed their supposed primary free agent target, center-back. George Springer, who signed with the Toronto Blue Jays late this week for a reported six years and $ 150 million.

Per Heyman, “[the] Mets the interest in [Bauer], but probably at a shorter agreement ”, noting the Dodgers as another team that would be involved under these parameters.

Bauer’s interest in securing a long-term contract this winter after winning the National League Cy Young Awarding in a COVID shortened 2020 season has been a prominent talking point around its market.

The UCLA product said earlier on its YouTube channel that it would be more likely to sign one-year contracts for the rest of its career.

On January 5, Bauer’s agent, Rachel Luba, confirmed Twitter that the right-hander “will consider a number of different types of contracts and structures”. Her client apparently wants an annual average value (AAV) of more than $ 30 million on his new transaction.

Bauer, 30, holds an alarming level of controversy, including several cases of online harassment, such as Ken Rosenthal of The Athletics set out in his report Friday night.

In 11 starts last season, the former third overall draft pick (2011; Diamondbacks) gave an ERA of 1.73 (2.88 FIP), with 100 strikeouts, 17 runs and 2.5 wins over the substitute (FanGraphs ), good for fourth place in baseball among qualified entrees.

Since the beginning of 2018, Bauer’s 11.6 fWAR is sixth among the same group (3.18 ERA, 11th). Zack Wheeler, which signed a $ 118 million five-year deal with Philadelphia last season, has 10.9 fWAR over the period, good for the ninth.
