Live updates: South Korea reports the largest daily death toll from COVID-19

Officials in South Korea reported 40 deaths in the past 24 hours on Tuesday, which is the country’s highest daily death toll since the start of the coronavirus outbreak.

The Associated Press reports that there are 1,046 new confirmed cases, bringing the total case tax to 58,725. Seoul also reported its first known cases of the variant first emerging in the UK.

Despite countries launching vaccines, the virus continues to spread in major cities around the world. Health officials in England see a “growing concern” because the healthcare system is under pressure.

Dr Yvonne Doyle, medical director of Public Health England, told the BBC: “This very high level of infection is worrying at a time when our hospitals are at their most vulnerable, with new admissions in many regions.”
