Jason Sudeikis wins Golden Globe for Actor for Music or Comedy TV Series

It seems like Ted Lasso really wins everyone over: Jason Sudeikis won the cast of the musical or comedy series at the 78th annual Golden Globe Awards.

This was Sudeikis’ first nomination of the HFPA and thus the first victory. It came for his portrayal of the titular American football coach who crossed the dam to work for a Premier League team in Apple TV Plus’ first year half hour. But Sudeikis first portrayed the character more than half a decade ago in promotional videos for NBC Sports’ coverage of the real Premier League. Expanding the character in a sentimental sitcom won audiences as well as critics during the premiere during the turbulent summer of 2020, and it also garnered its first award.

Sudeikis was nominated along with Don Cheadle of Black Friday, Nicholas Hoult of The Great, Eugene Levy of Schitt’s Creek and the current winner in the Ramy Youssef category of Ramy.

“Ted Lasso” is currently in production on his second season in London. It was renewed in October for a third season before production began on Season 2.

The Ted Lasso character originally appeared in an NBC Sports video in 2013 to promote the fact that NBC Sports would start broadcasting English Premier League games. It was so successful that NBC brought back the character the following year to serve as an analyst.

The program is popular with critics, and the first season achieved an approval rate of 86% on Rotten Tomatoes. Varieties Caroline Framke praised the show when she watched it and wrote: ‘Ted Lasso’ swept away my skepticism beyond a shadow of a doubt until there was nothing left – just as the character himself does to everyone he meets. ‘
