I never thought I would see LG close its mobile division ahead of Sony or HTC, but here we are. The South Korean company officially announced its exit from the smartphone market a few days ago. Although the company was not explicit about the software support situation at the time, some details have appeared since then.

According to the company’s Korean website (via XDA Developers), it will still continue to run Android 11 on some of its devices. If LG does follow its previously released implementation schedule, the LG Wing and the LG G8X will be one of the phones it will receive. Surprisingly, the company even claims that it will update some of its phones to the still 12-released Android 12.

The company is still debating which phones it will get, but it is safe to assume that the higher-end LG phones – the Wing, the V60 ThinQ and the Velvet – have the best chance.

A translated version of the snippet from LG’s Korean website.

The company promises its promise by stating that its operating system upgrade plans may change depending on Google’s distribution program and the performance of each device during the update test. If I were the owner of an LG phone, I would not be too optimistic that the company sticks to this – especially in the last few years it does not have a good record with updates. As the mobile space is now being completely abandoned, it will not be a big shock to see it cut short its update plans.
