Indianapolis FedEx gunman kills him when police close the door, authorities say

The shooter, who killed eight people at an Indiana FedEx plant, killed himself when police closed, officials said Friday.

Investigators are still trying to identify the man who set fire to the plant just outside Indianapolis at about 11pm on Thursday.

“We can not positively identify the suspect,” Indianapolis Deputy Chief Craig McCartt told a news conference.

Police officers said the gunman was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound at the scene and used a gun to carry out the murder.

‘When the officers entered, the situation was over. “The suspect took his own life shortly before officers entered the facility,” McCartt said, adding that the gunfire lasted only a few minutes.

The deputy chief could not say whether the shooter was a FedEx employee.

Eight people were killed in the shooting in which five others were also injured. The wounded are expected to survive.

“It looks like he started shooting randomly, and it started in the parking lot, and he’s going into the facility for a short while before taking his own life,” McCartt said of the killer.

The deputy principal said the investigation is still in its infancy.

Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett said the shooting “put the city in the spotlight” in ways we would never hope for.

“Last night, Indianapolis was visited again by the scourge of gun violence that killed too many in our community and in our country,” Hogsett said during the briefing. “No information will restore the lives that were taken, or the peace that was broken.”
