How Taylor Hall, other deadline additions in Bruins fared, debuts

It was not the most encouraging night for the Boston Bruins against the Buffalo Sabers on Tuesday, but they were still able to end it with a win.

The humble Sabers forced overtime and then a shootout against the Bs in TD Garden. Luckily for Boston, Jake DeBrusk and Charlie Coyle scored shooting goals and Jeremy Swayman stopped two Buffalo shots to clinch the 3-2 victory.

Taylor Hall, Curtis Lazar and Mike Reilly all rolled their eyes when they made their Bruins debut. Hall and Lazar confronted their former team after the Bruins acquired them for Anders Bjork and a second pick in the second round. As for Reilly, he was sent from Ottawa to Boston in exchange for a third player.

Here’s how all three Bruins newcomers fared in their debut.

TAYLOR HALL

Hall’s first goal as a Brown will have to wait, but the 29-year-old winger still made a positive impact on Boston in Tuesday night’s victory.

Early in the second period, Hall looked like he wanted to get some help on a goal from Craig Smith. It was officially considered unhelpful, but that does not mean that Hall makes a difference in the play.

Hall was also close to the playoffs, but Sabers defender Dustin Tokarski denied him of his first big Brown moment.

All in all, it was an encouraging debut for the first number in the draft in 2010. He finished with three shots on goal in 16:43 ice time.

CURTIS LAZAR

The Bruins’ fourth series buzzed with Lazar for the first time. While he and his teammates did not score at night, Lazar clearly provided enough energy. This in itself is an improvement.

“I’m not trying to rediscover the wheel in any way,” Lazar told NESN’s Sophia Jurksztowicz after the game. “I’m just playing my game. I think you guys see it is pretty simple, but it can be effective. To play with [Sean Kuraly] and [Chris Wagner] was a lot of fun. …

“It was undoubtedly a whirlwind all week, but got a nice afternoon nap today. Probably the best sleep I’ve had in a bit. But as soon as the puck fell tonight, I immediately felt at home.”

Lazar finishes with a shot at 12:58.

MIKE REILLY

Reilly scored ice time at 22:17 on Tuesday night, and although he had no points for it, he showed the ability to make a defender. He eventually scored five shots on goal.

Bruce head coach Bruce Cassidy likes what he has seen from all three additions.

“The first impression was good. Three guys who helped us win a hockey game,” he said after the win.

On the other hand was Anders Bjork, who was the only player in the spectacular Hall deal come in the dot column. Unfortunately for the prospect of the former B, it was not enough to take down his former team.

Next for Boston is a game with the New York Islanders Thursday night.
