‘Game of Thrones’: HBO unveils three more spinoffs in the works

HBO has more ‘Game of Thrones’ prequels in the work, including one from ‘Rome’ creator Bruno Heller and another about Dorne’s legendary founder

HBO developed three more Game of Thrones prequel projects.

The network has three additional ideas in the works based on the author George RR Martin’s fantasy world, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed it.

One of those projects, job title 9 Trips, is from Rome creator Bruno Heller and follows Lord Corlys Velaryon, or The Sea Snake, the Lord of the Tides and head of House Velaryon. The character also appears in the upcoming green light GoT prequel House of the Dragon, where he is played by actor Steve Toussaint. This attempt therefore represents a potential spin-off of a character from a series that has not yet been shot (let alone broadcast).

A second project, working title 10,000 Ships, revolves around the war queen Princess Nymeria, a revered ancestor of House Martell who founded from the kingdom Dorne (she became so legendary in the kingdom that two characters bore her name in the original series – Sand Snake Nymeria Sand and Arya’s direwolf). Her story takes place about 1000 years before the events Game of Thrones, which makes it much older on the Westeros timeline than any of the other projects previously announced (HBO shot a prequel pilot in 2019 who was even further back during the Age of Heroes, but it never made it to the series not). Also, Game of Thrones added a storyline that involved Dorne halfway through the series, which made fans feel like an organic part of the show. If it goes green, the Nymeria project could give Sunspear a whole new and redemptive approach.

The third project takes place in the infamous slums of King’s Landing of Flea Bottom – the maze of streets streets in the capital where characters like Davos Seaworth and Gendry Baratheon were born.

The projects are in addition to the upcoming green light series House of the Dragon, which begins filming in the UK in April and stars Olivia Cooke, Emma D’Arcy, Paddy Considine and Matt Smith. Dragon follows the story of House Targaryen 300 years before the events GoT and builds on an epic civil war that tore Westeros apart. The series is from fellow fans Miguel Sapochnik and Ryan Condal is expected to premiere in 2022.

Another HBO project previously reported in development is based on Martin’s popular Dunk and Egg short stories, which followed the adventures of the hedgehog ser Duncan the Tall and his pysy Egg, who later became king Aegon V Targaryen would be. In addition, there is an animated Throne project is being considered on a topic that has not yet been announced. The boom of projects is part of HBO’s post-GoT strong to try to replace the incredible popularity of the program, especially now that it is fully immersed in the flowing wars with HBO Max.

‘The way we try to approach it is not through [saying]”We need five shows in three years,” but “What are the stories worth telling?” Casey Bloys, HBO’s chief executive, told THR in January. ‘We have developed different worlds. The one I want to do is the one that I think is the most creative. I prefer to talk about the stories and the showrunners and their vision, as opposed to achieving some random target for the right number of shows. ‘

HBO declined to comment. Deadline first reported the news of the new spinoffs.
